About
Ironi Hey High School, Haifa
Who we are ?
Ironi Hey High School, Haifa, was the first six year public high school, on the Carmel. It was established in 1962. Today, it is the largest public high school in Haifa. The number of students studying at Ironi Hey, both in the middle school and in the high school is around 1600. There are around 150 faculty members.
The students population is quite diverse. The majority of students are Jewish, including new immigrants from the Ex-Soviet Union and Ethiopia, but there are also Druz and Arab students..
The safety, well being of our students and an open dialogue between educators and students are the core values that direct us in our work at Ironi Hey.
Ironi Hey is committed to academic excellence. The doors to the most prestigious faculties at the university are open to our graduates thanks to the high level of learning. In the11th grade students choose their majors. Each student takes at least 3 majors. Many choose sciences (physics, biology, computer science, chemistry and robotics. Many choose Arabic. English, of course, is mandatory for everyone. Ironi Hey is well known in town for its Drama class. There are excellent film making and art classes, as well.
Ironi Hey has a joint program with The Technion, The Institute of Technology, for children gifted in mathematics.
There are many more academically oriented enriching programs our students can choose from.
Ironi Hey is committed to social excellence and involvement in the community. We encourage our students to become young leaders.
Every 10th grade student volunteers throughout the year. Some continue, till they graduate, as youth movement leaders or help at centers for mentally challenged children etc.
There are quite a few socially oriented enriching programs at school, such as a computer based research joint program with an Arab middle school in the village of Tamra, in the Galilee, and an exchange program with the
Goethe Gymnasium in Bensheim, Germany. Both programs encourage an open dialogue and tolerance.
Jewish and Israeli culture and identity and the commitment to the Jewish people are core values at Ironi Hey.
There is a special focus on the Hebrew calendar in the school's extracurricular program.
The programs with our sister school, Gann Academy in Boston, play a major role in this area.
Both 11th grade junior exchange programs and the video conference provide an excellent learning experience for our students and help create a commitment, a bond, between our communities.
Ironi Hey senior year program includes an 8 day visit to Poland which takes place after a long process of preparation. Many of the 12th graders join this program. The goals of the visit are not only to cherish the memory of those who have not survived the Holocaust, but to learn, as moral and conscientious people from this terrible chapter in the history of humanity.
Special attention is paid to the physical environment at the school. A rich, stimulating and well taken care of environment contributes to the feeling of well being and safety of the students and to the learning process.
